Story of the Legendary Jesse Woodson James
Jesse Woodson James , A.K.A. Jesse James was an American outlaw who attracted world wide fascination and became a figure of folklore since his death. Some people see him as a cold bloded killer , while others regard him as America's Robin Hood.
Jesse James was born in the Centerville area of Clay County, Missouri on September 5, 1847. Centerville would later be renamed as Kearney. In the spring of 1864, the teenager Jesse James joined a bloodthirsty guerrilla group led by William "Bloody Bill" Anderson. Jesse and his brother Frank took part in the notorious Centralia massacre, in which 22 unarmed Union soldiers were dragged from a train and murdered. In a battle three miles south of Centralia, Jesse was credited with shooting down the Union commander and taking the lives of seven other men. Over 120 federal troops were killed that day. By the end of the Civil War , Jesse was wounded and his cousin Zerelda Mimms nursed him back to health.
In 1866 , Frank and Jesse James met with Cole Younger to plan their first bank robbery. The James-Younger gang robbed banks, trains and stagecoaches from Iowa to Texas , from Kansas to West Virginia. On September 7, 1876 , the James-Younger gang was destroyed when they failed in their attempt to rob a bank in Northfield, Minnesota.
Jesse moved to St. Joseph, Missouri, where he went under the assumed name of Thomas Howard. In April of 1882, Jesse was short of cash and recruited Bob and Charlie Ford to help him with another robbery. The $10,000 reward on Jesse was too appealing. On April 3, 1882 , as Jesse stood on a chair to dust and straighten a picture , Bob Ford fired a shot behind Jesse's ear that killed him immediately. Jesse James was 34 years old.
