Story of the Legendary John Henry Holliday
"John Doc Holliday, aka John Henry Holliday was the most famous dentist in the West. He eventually became known as a "beady eyed killer" who occasionally practiced dentistry and was in on the legendary gunfight at the OK Corral with Wyatt Earp. In fact, it was Wyatt Earp who was quoted as saying that Holliday was the deadliest man with a six gun he ever saw. Doc was said to have been ravaged by alcoholism and tuberculosis and died at the rather tender age of 35. (1851-1887).
John Henry Holliday , son of Henry Burroughs Holliday and Alice Jane McKey , was born August 14, 1851 , in Griffin , Georgia. He spent approximately 8 of his youthful years in Lowndes County. The Holliday family refugeed from Griffin to this county in 1864 , shortly after Major Holliday's medical discharge from the Confederacy. Three months after the death of John's mother in 1866, his father remarried. The Holliday's later established residence in Valdosta at 405 East Savannah Avenue.
John attended the Valdosta Institute , where Samuel McWhir Varnedoe presided as headmaster. Upon completion of his education at the Institute, he enrolled at the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery. Shortly after graduation from dental college, Dr. Holliday moved to Atlanta.
Holliday learned that he had tuberculosis , he moved West in search of drier climate. Apparently, he continued to practice dentistry sporadically, becoming more and more involved with lawmen and the gambling element - the pinnacle of which was the famous Tombstone gunfight.
Holliday's health continued to deteriorate. He died on November 8, 1887 of tuberculosis in a hotel bed, in Glenwood Springs , Colorado , where he is buried in Linwood Cemetery (maybe) , and both he and Alice Jane McKey Holliday are buried in Sunset Hill Cemetary , Valdosta." (maybe)
