The Paul Chen Practical Hand-and-a-Half Sword
The Practical Hand and a Half sword is styled on a Albrecht II of Austria sword , a classic design from the early part of the 15th century , with a simple cruciform hilt , flattened diamond section blade and typical hand-and-a-half grip. With a weight of just 3 ¼ lbs. , the Practical Hand and a Half sword handles very well without tiring the reenactor during a long day in the field.
The styling of the Practical Hand and a Half Sword is based on an authentic historical sword but it is tailored to meet the needs of the re-enactor for stage combat at a very affordable price. This very popular and affordable weapon features authentic hilt styling , with a fully tempered un-edged and un-pointed blade.
The Practical Hand and a Half Sword is designed to withstand rugged use while providing the level of safety required
by many of today’s re-enactment societies. The blade is crafted from 1065 high-carbon steel ,
hardened to HRC 50 , which restricts edge notching to acceptable levels while providing resilience and
protection against brittleness. While the blade is substantial , it is fullered to provide balance and good handling characteristics.
The Practical HandandaHalf Sword blade features 1/16" wide edges and a rounded tip for safety.
The tang is also substantial , with radiused corners at the blade shoulder and no welds. The end of the tang is riveted over the pommel , which both eliminates any possibility of inadvertent disassembly and provides a traditional means of tightening a loose hilt. The hardwood grip is leather covered. The scabbard is fabricated in glass-filled resin, to provide great impact resistance , to eliminate swelling and to minimize blade corrosion problems. The scabbard now features belt rings that adjust to allow vertical or horizontal carry. The wood-grain finish is attractive, but most reenactors will decorate the scabbard to match their persona.
This fully functional broad sword is tailored to meet the demands of reenactment and stage combat.
